Creative History

Overview

Why did Victorians follow such strict codes of conduct? Why were so many poor folk cramped into tiny houses and the wealthy sleep in separate beds? After a quick overview of the Victorian period (considering major events, famous people, art, science and inventions) this course helps you step into the Victorian world and enables you to better understand the motivations and actions of that time.

The course then focuses on ways to use this Victorian topic to develop children's historical understanding of people's actions:

• through looking at how to deepen their analysis of evidence,
• by developing empathy through looking at what motivated people,
• by exploring ways to enable children to build knowledge about the time.

The course then looks at life at the time. Through discussion and handling of replica artefacts we consider similarities and differences between life now and then, how materials were used, why materials changed, and how they can be used to help children make conclusions about the times they came from.

Over the day, in addition to examining how a Victorian topic can further children's historical skills, links to other curriculum areas are explored – particularly Materials (Science) and Design technology. This is then followed by looking at creative practical ways to develop this topic in the classroom. Attendees have the opportunity to create their own models to take back to the classroom!
