Delegate Comments

  • "inspiring ideas"
  • "exciting useful day"
  • "I've learned far more by discovering and exploring crafts and artefacts than I ever would have done by just listening to a lecture - and I'll remember it!"

Courses available as INSET

All courses conducted off-site, are also available for INSET days.  See here for course details.  In addition the topics below are available for INSET.

KS1

Famous People

  • Florence Nightingale was an amazing lady but why is she so worthy of being one of the most famous historical figures? This course looks at her outstanding contribution to modern life outside of the nursing for which she is so well known. Although aimed at KS1 this unit may well be of interest to KS2 teachers, particularly with its links to Maths and PSHCE.

  • Living Like Florence - Break your fast then follow a Victorian day.

  • Mary Seacole, doctoress, was a lady before her time in many senses. This course looks at her life and her amazing adventures.  This course may be of interest to KS2 teachers looking at issues of slavery and famous African-Caribbean figures.

  • Living Like Samuel Pepys - Break your fast then look at the 'Stuart' life style.

Themes

  • Toys. This course steps beyond using toys to simply show old and new  to looking at how toys have been used from Ancient times to modern day. It then looks at creative practical ways to develop historical skills with KS1 children.

  • Homes. Starting with an overview of homes across the ages, you will look at changes in function, layout and use of houses. Ways to extend KS1 children's historical skills and understanding are covered. Although particularly aimed at KS1 this course will be useful for KS2 teachers.

  • In my Grandpa's Home were Grandpa's Toys - Step back in time to the 1940's: bread and jam, mechanical toy, sleeping places.

  • Victorian Holidays by the Sea - Steam trains, iced cream, puppet shows and swings, all the fun of the sea.

Spanning KS1 and KS2

Empathy Skills

  • Using Historical Empathy to teach Emotional Literacy. Developing empathy skills with history can help children to better understand their relationships with others. The activities in this course are based on the experience from over five years of working with emotionally and behaviourally challenged children. Beginning with looking at the stages in developing emotional literacy and how they relate together the discussion then moves to exploring how the stages can be used to develop children's historical empathy skills. Practical exercises are demonstrated, followed with opportunities for teachers to develop their own resources pertinent to their particular history topics.

Chronology

  • Chronology (Timelines).  Fun and interesting ways to teach what many people consider to be one of the hardest concepts to develop.  You will gain practical ideas for the classroom, and if time allows, make your own resources to take away.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

  • Helping Less Able Children. Looking for ways to help children that need a little more help to understand your teaching? This course looks at practical ways to help children develop their questioning skills and ability to use evidence to support their arguments. Most of these techniques demonstrated are generic to all subjects – however the examples given on this course will be history based. The activities are based on over five years experience of being a successful SENco – as described by Ofsted. Activities cover ways to limit the emotional factor, ways to develop reasoned arguments and higher order thinking skills. They are designed to be practical and classroom friendly and suitable for NQT's and more experienced teachers.

KS2

Ancient Egypt

  • Ancient Egyptians. Where are the 'Black lands'? Where did the name Egypt come from?  This course helps you step into the Ancient Egyptian world to better understand the motivations and actions of that time.

Invaders and Settlers

  • Invaders and Settlers.  This course looks at the pressures on populations and why they moved.  It also covers the similarities and differences between cultures that invaded Britain and their legacy today.

Roman Britain

Tudors

  • Tudors. Why was Henry VIII damned if he didn't have a son ? How could a 15 year old be held responsible for an attempt on the throne planned over many years?  This course helps you step into the Tudor world to better understand the motivations and actions of that time.

  • Thrifty Talented Tudors - Peasant life in Tudor times: leisure or survival, black bread with weevils,' WHAT' for soap!
  • Traditionally Tremendous Tudors - Noble life in Tudor times: velvet and silk; cocoa to drink and "pin prick" portraits.

Victorians

  • Victorians. Why did Victorians follow such strict codes of conduct? Why were so many poor folk cramped into tiny houses and the wealthy sleep in separate beds?  This course helps you step into the world of the Victorians to better understand their motivations and actions.

  • Victorian Viands and Vendors - Working to live: food for factory fodder; five in a bed; rags to rugs.
  • Vainglorious Victorians - Wealthy life styles: picnics and feasts; paper pursuits and holes in their underwear.
