Overview

Starting with ways to develop children's understanding of why peoples invaded and how it felt, this course looks at the pressures on populations and why they moved. It seeks to give teachers an understanding of the main differences between Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.

Through discussion and handling of replica artefacts we consider similarities and differences between life now and then, how materials were used, why materials changed, and how they can be used to help children make conclusions about the times they came from.

In addition to examining how an Invaders and Settlers topic can further children's historical skills, links to Materials (Science) and Design Technology are explored. The theoretical part of the day is followed by a look at creative practical ways to develop the invaders and settlers topic in the classroom. Attendees have the opportunity to create their own models to take back to the classroom!
