Who are the Ancient Greeks?

Daphne, is Phydra's cousin, her chariot team won at the last Olympics. Although, as married lady she was not allowed to watch the race; as the teams owner she can wear their winner's ribbon.  She is hoping her team will be successful this year.

Phydra, is married to Nicomachus and Daphne's cousin.  She is a gifted weaver of braid. She is hoping to meet with friends and family at this Olympics.

Nicomachus is a potter, married to Phydra. He loves to show his wares and if possible attempt a sale.

Ancient Greek's Visit

Meet the Hellenes: Daphne, Phydra and Nicomachus as they  travel under the truce from Athens to the Olympics. They will be very pleased to be pausing to rest at your school.  Confused that you call them Greeks rather than Hellenes they use the audience to create a living timeline of Ancient Greek history. Taking you from the Minoans (with the Minortaur legend) to the end of the Roman empire they look at significant names, events, styles of art, pottery and helmets.

If time,  they then move to looking at the legend of Odysseus and the Minotaur - expect the audience to become the narrator's actors in this great story. Or, reliving the 5 days of the Olympic games. Nicomachus might even show you how to do the Hellenic standing long jump. With his coaching children have leapt more than 10 metres.

Alternatively,  maybe you would just like to to explore  packages and parcels containing various everyday items and gifts for family and friends. Travel worn and hungry, they may break their  fast and unwrap sack lunches parcels to check and discuss their content.

There is no set script for the presentation, it depends on what artefacts or subjects the audience become interested in.  However, the material can be steered in the direction(s) desired by class teacher.

Workshops

If desired, the characters (or their historian alter-egoa) can run workshops for  the children in conjunction with the teachers.  Or teachers can opt to run these themselves whilst the characters work with another group/class. Workshop themes can include:  design your own Ancient Greek outfit;  watching Nicomachus 'pot' an object then handle and record his wares; looking at coins and how the Greeks introduced coins to the Mediterranean, look at food by unpacking  a sack lunch or sampling foods; look at the development of writing and then translate your name or a message.

Travelling Shop

The museum shop experience can come to you.  This is a history themed shop that can covers all of the primary history periods, or can be  tailored to the Ancient Greek period. It has been designed to be a  "step back in time shopping experience".  So that the objects for sale mimic items peddlers might have sold at the time.  It is available both as an add on feature; or, as a workshop market stall where children are given reproduction money which they can either keep or use to choose  a purchase  from a range of items typically available in those times.
